Day -13: The empty nest

The crisis has passed and my flat is ... not as empty as I'd like it to be. But at least the bulk of the stuff I want to keep has been seen safely into storage, although things did not go according to plan.

The removalists were due between 1400 and 1500 yesterday - they turned up at 1600. We tried, but the storage place closes at 1730 and in the end my stuff had to stay in the truck overnight. At 0800 this morning we were all waiting outside the storage place.

Funny, my stuff looked so bulky in my flat but it all fitted into the storage locker with lots of space to spare. I could have taken a smaller, cheaper locker. I could add the left-over cupboard and tallboy, even the TV and its cabinet. But I won't. I left those things out as part of a deliberate policy of replacement. It's nice to know that if I ever do this again (and I might – although it will not be before 2013), I can fit everything I own into 11 cubic metres instead of the 14 I rented this time.

I'm completely buggered and have declared the rest of today to be a day of rest.

Tomorrow I begin the process of sifting the remaining junk, 95% of which will simply get thrown out. I will get a bin delivered to dispose of the TV, TV stand, washing machine, dryer, cupboard and tallboy on Monday (pick up on Wednesday). I'll also book the carpet cleaners for Monday.

I'm rounding the bend. The home lap is approaching.

  1. Go Greg!
Hope you're not doing your back in with all that heavy lifting.

  2. I lugged my useless washing machine out onto the landing today. Wretched thing weighs more than I do! Had to stop and rest after that even though I'd cheated and used a "sled" made from a broken down cardboard box.
